Two worlds, one nightmare...
Cait Weerd has no idea the undain are hunting her. She doesn’t know the vile creatures need
her blood to survive. She doesn’t even know she’s a witch, descended from a long line of witches. Cait Weerd doesn’t know much, but all that’s about to change.

At Manchester Central Library, she’s caught in the crossfire between the witches and the undain, two worlds fighting for an old book. Cait takes the book and is told to run, hide the book or destroy it. The undain’s secrets are buried in its pages, and they want it almost as much as they want her.

The fate of two worlds is at stake. Cait has to decide what to do: run, fight, or hope it all goes away.

But then she learns who she really is, along with the terrible truth of what the undain have been doing in our world all this time...

Just finished Book 1 and I was hoping it would make me wanna read the rest. I do. I am a witch, and while I can't do magic the way it is in the book, there is a cost for the magic they do. I liked that a lot. I loved that the corporation is truly evil, as I believe many corporations are.

I'm a fan of Kewin's work, and as a fairly long-time reader (in cat years), I was thrilled to see some overlap between this novel and his story GUITAR HEROES. I won't say anymore to avoid spoilers, but after you read HEDGE WITCH, definitely pick up a copy of that story. Now as for HEDGE WITCH, I'm not a big fantasy buff, but I enjoyed the likable characters, the fast-moving plot (despite some long-winded conversations that could have been shortened), the creative world-building, and the creepy baddies. The descriptions are exceptional, and the action scenes pull you into the fray. Looking forward to the sequel.

This was an entertaining book for an afternoon read. The characters were interesting, the witches very feminine and men/dragonlords handsome, courageous, sensitive. Much of the story is taken up with developing the three worlds and giving history of the current crisis, so this is a likely must read before diving into the sequel. The witches are talented but frequently their interventions go astray as they are on the run for their lives, and on a mission to save both the Humans and world of An from the ancient necromancer. Consistent and fast paced action completes an exciting, quick read.

The positives: well written, imaginative, stellar world building. Reading the blurb, I thought uh-oh, A Discovery of Witches rip-off. Very much not the case. It actually has this awesome Sixty-Nine Nails feel. The first few pages had me doubting thus was for me, once she hit the library, I loved it.
The Negatives: unfortunately, just as I became invested into Cat's story, the author moved to new characters in an entirely different world. Had he switched back to Cait sooner, maybe I would have given more stars, but the storyline in Andar went on forever and seemed fractured. I liked Hellen, so I can't quite pin down why I felt such a disconnect to the storyline and characters. Back to Cait and another new character is introduced. We never really get to know Danny. They are too busy running. I actually stopped reading after the forge scene. I feel at this point for me, it's a two star. If I can't care about the characters, why bother? But I AM home sick today. On the off chance it's just me, I gave three stars. Books normally have the power to take me out of myself, this one didn't do it for me. I still think the writing and creativity was top notch. I will revisit this book and would also try others by the author.

I thought it was a good book and interesting enough to read the rest of the series. I'm looking forward to finding out what mischief the characters get into next.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read (spoiler-free review)

I don't want to give away too much of the story because part of the enjoyment on a first read is finding out what is going on.

There are two hedge witches: one in our world and one in the world of Andar, and the story initially moves between the two. Cait is introduced to the danger she (and our whole world) is in, then we move to Andar and find the danger that threatens there. The characters from the two worlds meet and there is a long and often apparently hopeless chase as they try to escape the evil threatening both worlds and maybe even try to bring it to an end. The book ends inconclusively; I shall have to wait for the next one to find out how they get on.

I enjoyed the characters, including one that struck me as particularly amusing and unusual, and the way they interacted; the occasional humour; the imaginative world-building; and the well-chosen details in the descriptions. I found the escapes from enemy clutches became a bit repetitive but not enough to stop me from reading on.

Although I really don't like stories that aren't complete in themselves, I'm willing to give this one a pass because I do want to find out what happens next.
